ICN Gives Cable Students Exclusive Telecom Experience
On Tuesday, April 22, Network Cable Installation (NCI) students from the Ottumwa Job Corps received hands-on training from telecom specialists from Iowa Communications Network (ICN).
Welcomed by Iowa Lt. Governor Chris Cournoyer, the student trainees were encouraged by hearing her story of how she came to be the Lieutenant Governor. Lt. Governor Cournoyer also highlighted soft skills needed to be employable, such as being open to change, showing up to work every day, working in a team environment and having active listening skills.
During the morning session, NCI students interacted at different stations with ICN staff and representatives from Fiber Network Services (FNS), ICN's managed service provider. This exclusive mentoring opportunity allowed the students to experience a range of demonstrations, which included:
- Looking at fiber optic cables and noticing a few that are damaged. The Outside Plant team, Chris Harris and Mike Dalen, showcased how to locate the fiber and the careful art of slicing fiber. Students even got to try out the slicing equipment, a skilled technique essential for maintaining broadband connectivity and critical infrastructure.
- Learning how to use different tools for the job. An Inside Plant team member, Tyler Smith, explained how to properly use a splice box, a circuit toner, and wand. Smith opened up the ceiling to see the best way to run cables in a room, and everyone headed to a nearby data closet to listen for the different tones to locate the Voice circuit.
- FNS rolled in a work truck that showcased all the tools ready for use on job sites to assist ICN customers. The students checked out a handheld optical testing device, a tool for measuring fiber loss, and equipment for locating fiber.
The day’s activities were filled with telecom industry knowledge and experience. In addition to the planned demonstrations, the students toured ICN’s carrier-grade testing lab, Broadband Information Center, and the Iowa State Capitol.
In 2023, ICN teamed up with the Ottumwa Job Corps Center’s NCI program to develop the Peer to Career program. This program highlights the partnerships that ICN has with the private sector, gives exposure to projects that rely on the statewide fiber optic network and provides infrastructure knowledge. The student trainees meet monthly via video and hear about on-the-job experiences from a variety of industry experts.
