It has been an action-packed few months for our Peer-to-Career network cabling students from the Ottumwa Job Corps. Through virtual sessions with leading industry professionals, students connected directly with experts shaping Iowaβs digital landscape, gaining invaluable real-world insights.
Here is a look at the industry experts the students learned from recently:
April: Precision & Customer Care with South Slope Cooperative
South Slope Cooperative explained what it takes to run a fiber optic network, offering virtual wisdom that goes far beyond textbooks:
- The New Tech Reality: Why modern technicians need a seamless blend of physical infrastructure knowledge and advanced IT networking skills.
- Sweat the Small Stuff: The critical importance of precision, from meticulous labeling to keeping fiber connections free of microscopic dust.
- Soft Skills = Tech Skills: Why strong communication and customer problem-solving are what truly make a technician stand out.
May: Evolution & Agility with Harlan Municipal Utilities
Harlan Municipal Utilities tracked their evolution from a 1990s cable provider to a fiber-to-the-home network, highlighting the virtual "day-in-the-life" reality of modern telecom professionals:
- Infrastructure Agility: Navigating aerial vs. underground installations and pivoting during emergency disaster recovery.
- The Power of "Dark Fiber": How point-to-point connections serve as the backbone for critical community services like hospitals and schools.
- Mastering the Home Network: Why modern technicians must act as part installer and part cybersecurity consultant to navigate Wi-Fi 6/7 and secure smart homes.
June: Hands-On Training with Iowa Communications Network (ICN)
Switching gears from online screens to the real world, our students stepped out of the classroom for an in-person training session with members from the ICN team.
- A Capitol Experience: Students traveled to Des Moines to visit the Iowa State Capitol, where they explored the historic building's unique telecom infrastructure.
- Real-World Fiber Fusion: Technicians provided hands-on training, letting students practice fiber splicing and testing using actual field equipment.
- Behind the Scenes Network Operations: The team showed how emergency backup systems keep elevators and fire panels connected. Students visited a telecom closet to see how cables and switches connect an entire building, toured the main distribution room where all statewide connections meet.

Bridging the Last Mile Across Iowa
We are grateful to South Slope, Harlan Municipal Utilities, ICN, and our broader network of Iowa telecommunications partners. Whether bridging the distance through virtual technology or welcoming students into the field for hands-on practice, these partnerships give our students a firsthand look at the broadband landscape.
