The digital landscape is shifting, and Iowa’s youth are at the forefront of the change. Members of ICN’s  Statewide Youth Broadband Advisory Council (SYBAC) recently completed a series of impactful outreach projects, proving that the next generation of tech leaders is already making a difference in our communities.

From classroom presentations to deep dives interviews, these students are bridging the gap between high-tech careers and local community safety.

Annabelle: Inspiring Future Innovators

Annabelle, a student at South Central Calhoun High School, returned to her middle school to lead a "Technology and Careers" discussion. In rural districts where tech isn't always the primary focus, Annabelle’s presentation served as a vital roadmap for the future. Her session presented the topics into actionable insights:

  • Cybersecurity Fundamentals: Annabelle explored the different types of digital security, common cyber-attacks, and the emerging role of AI.
  • The Tech Career Roadmap: She discussed practical ways students can build their skills before entering the workforce.
  • A Vision for the Future: Sharing her own journey, Annabelle discussed her upcoming transition to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in New York to major in Software Engineering.

JT: From Curiosity to Career Insight

Waterloo West student JT took his project straight to the source of technical education. He sat down with Barry Griffiths, a Cybersecurity instructor at Hawkeye Community College, to pull back the curtain on the industry.

While JT admitted he wasn't sure what to expect initially, the experience was helpful. "Before I talked to Mr. Griffiths, I didn't expect anything... but after our conversation, his answers gave me a lot of insight into the cyber world and how to progress down a career path," JT noted. His project highlights how mentorship can turn a simple interest into a focused career goal.

Hannah: Where Public Safety Meets the Digital World

Drawing on 15 years of command experience, a local Chief of Police sat down with Beckman Catholic student Hannah to discuss how technology is reshaping police work. Her project revealed that modern public safety is now a digital mission.

Through her interview, Hannah learned that digital evidence is now central to most investigations. She highlighted the importance of a proactive defense, using VPNs and forensics to protect community data, and emphasized that the "human element," including staff education and training, remains the most vital shield against cyber threats.

Ryli: The Mission to Power Iowa

Davis County High School student Ryli went behind the scenes at a local electric cooperative to see how cybersecurity keeps the lights on across the state. She worked with a systems analyst to understand the 24/7 mission of protecting our energy infrastructure.

Her project showcased how local teams monitor national alerts and coordinate with infrastructure agencies to stay ahead of threats. She noted that the most effective way to keep our state safe is by pairing high-tech monitoring tools with constant staff training, ensuring Iowa’s power grid remains resilient.

Building a Secure Iowa

These SYBAC projects represent more than an assignment; they demonstrate the talent and dedication of Iowa's youth. By sharing their knowledge and interviewing local experts, these students are ensuring a more secure and connected future for all Iowans.

Congratulations to Annabelle, JT, Hannah, and Ryli on their incredible contributions!
