An inside look at the telecom industry

This summer, our Peer to Career program with the Ottumwa Job Corps’ network cabling trainees continued their career connected learning with industry experts in the telecom field. Our monthly virtual sessions provide a valuable, behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day projects and culture of several companies.

July: A Look into Lumen

Lumen started the summer by highlighting their career opportunities in Iowa. They covered everything from company culture to specific job skills. The Lumen team showcased the art of fiber splicing and the specific skills, techniques, and tools needed.  The session emphasized the importance of a growth mindset, teamwork, and on-the-job training.

August: Explaining the NOC of the ICN

Our own Network Operations Center (NOC) Lead, Vicki, provided an overview of applications and monitoring systems that are used by technicians in our Iowa-based 24/7 NOC. She shared her unique journey and a ton of expert advice for aspiring technicians. 

Vicki gave an inside look at how the NOC manages alerts, customer calls, and support tickets. She explained how to communicate with customers that call in with trouble, along with evaluating and taking actions when the alarming platform is giving alerts and notifications when equipment may be failing. This session also highlighted how beginning a career at a NOC can familiarize technicians with many processes and acronyms.

September: A Day in the Life with MetroNet

Experts from MetroNet provided a fantastic behind-the-scenes look at the company and a "day in the life" of technicians. They demonstrated fiber splicing and answered student questions about interviews, certifications, and what it takes to get hired. This session highlighted that while certifications are important, soft skills like showing up to work on time, teamwork, patience, and a willingness to learn are crucial for success. This team also highlighted their strong work-life balance and team atmosphere.
