SYBAC Applications Are Now Open!
Are you an Iowa high school student interested in technology or do you want to learn more about cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, and Iowa tech companies? If this sounds like you or someone you know, encourage them to apply today to be part of the 2025-2026 Statewide Youth Broadband Advisory Council (SYBAC) coordinated by the Iowa Communications Network (ICN).
Each year, students across Iowa have direct interaction with state government technology leaders and Iowaβs technology industry professionals. The SYBAC meets 8 times during the school year (monthly on the second Tuesday from 2 β 3 PM), with 7 sessions held via video conference, beginning in September 2025 and ending in April 2026. The session in April is a special in-person session where SYBAC students have the chance to visit the Capitol Complex in Des Moines and interact directly with ICNβs leadership team and legislative officials.
During the school year SYBAC members will also:
- Receive access to cybersecurity curriculum. If training is successfully completed, students will gain a certificate from Fortinet.
- Interview a community executive about technology -- OR -- complete a community service project on the topic of cybersecurity.
The deadline to submit an application is May 29.
To be considered, an applicant must be a full-time enrolled high school student in grades 10-12. A student candidate must also meet the following requirements:
- Receive a recommendation from an educator at the school they attend.
- Write a short essay explaining their viewpoints about technology.
- Has an interest in engaging with peers for the entire school year.
- Commit to attending the virtual sessions on the second Tuesday of each month at 2 PM.
