Providing mobility and flexibility when our customers need it the most.
We operate what is, essentially, our own telephone company that runs over the single wide-area network using virtual local area networks (VLAN) to separate voice and data traffic. ICN has partnered with Lumen (formerly CenturyLink) to manage this VoIP solution. Our VoIP phone system enables enterprise capabilities like room to room calling, voice mail, local and managed long-distance calling, and E911. We also offer fax, elevators, and alarm services via POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) lines provided by Lumen.
We know redundancy matters. Our cloud VoIP service is a fully redundant instance of the Lumen's BroadSoft Broadworks platform. VoIP enables users to use the Internet for telephone calls by sending voice data in packets using IP rather than by traditional circuit transmissions of the public switched telephone network.
An Experienced Provider
ICN has a long history of providing Voice communications services. Our experience began in the 1990s, when Voice services on the Capitol Complex, in Des Moines, transitioned to the ICN. The next VoIP accomplishment occurred in 2004, when ICN introduced VoIP technology to the Capitol Complex voice network.
In order to transition to full VoIP services, infrastructure on the Capitol Complex required to be updated to support upgraded Voice technology. ICN invested $1.7 million to upgrade fiber, copper cabling, and power. This infrastructure upgrade increased bandwidth capabilities that benefit all State government agencies. In total, the upgrade equaled approximately 58 miles of new cable installed on the Capitol Complex. In 2019 ICN began providing VoIP services statewide.
