We are already three months into this new school year and our Statewide Youth Broadband Advisory Council (SYBAC) group is continuing to have their virtual discussions about broadband and technology.
The September meeting was our get-to-know-you session as students introduced themselves to one another. The meeting started off with ICN’s Executive Director, Randy Goddard, welcoming everyone to SYBAC and explaining ICN’s fiber optic connectivity statewide, along with providing an overview about the ICN and listing our current projects and initiatives. In addition, ICN’s new Business Services Manager Steph DeVault joined the discussion and shared her experience within the industry.
The topic for October focused on cybersecurity. With October being Cybersecurity Awareness Month, our guest, ICN’s Chief Information Officer (CIO), Ryan Mulhall, communicated about the importance of cybersecurity and highlighted technology jobs. He explained our DDoS Mitigation service, and how ICN works to protect Iowa schools from security incidents. The group also talked about how interconnected people are with IoT devices, but security should continue to be in the forefront before convenience.
In November the group participated in an interactive discussion with Adam Shell from the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT). His Future of Transportation presentation focused on Automated Transportation (AT) activities from organizational structure to stakeholder engagement to vision and planning. Shell highlighted the different levels of driving automation and provided a vehicle technology overview which illustrated sensors, cameras, GPS receivers, and mapping. The session ended by discussing the future of Personal Delivery Devices (PDDs) and also infrastructure and operational readiness from work zone data, to pavement marking, and enhanced weather reporting.
Fortinet NSE 1 Program Certificate
This year SYBAC students were given the task of working their way through the self-paced Fortinet NSE 1 Program certificate. This Network Security Associate Certification teaches about the security threat landscape. The course highlights many individuals behind cybersecurity attacks, what motivates bad actors, and the principal causes of computer and network breaches. At the end of the SYBAC term, our students will receive a certificate for their accomplishment in understanding the ever-increasing threat landscape.
